OUGD505 - Design Production 2: Cruise Ships - Brochures

I went into some travel agents and looked at brochures for cruises. I did this to see how the content differed to sites, and the layout of them.

Crafted by Kuoni
First I went into Kuoni as I had looked at the website for them. I looked at a small brochure which had a brief introduction to all the cruise lines they offer.

The first pages talk about the perks of Kuoni, and persuade you to want to buy from them as it says it is secure, award-winning and trusted.

It then goes to a dps on each cruise line giving an introduction and one of the cruises it offers.

Kuoni Celebrity Cruises
This is a brochure in Kuoni about Celebrity Cruises. It comes in a case to show the Kuoni logo, and the actual brochure is just from Celebrity Cruises.

The back of the case tells where all the Kuoni shops are and pictures of all the available brochures.

Contents
This is the contents page:

Ship Highlights
It folds out to show a ship with all the features highlighted in a key. This is really useful because it lets the viewer see what is available quickly at a glance, getting the main information straightforwardly, but also in an interactive way. It has a lot of features such as
  • Restaurants
  • Casino
  • Martini Bar
  • Art Gallery
  • Solarium
  • Aquaspa
  • Theatre
  • Fitness Centre

Introduction
This is an introduction to the cruise line and says how broad the destinations are as you can see 'ancient ruins to colourful bazaars'. It also boasts that the ship has award-winning food, great service and accommodation as well as a spa and shows.

There is also a key to the photos that are used to show where they are taken, and a small paragraph on how you can visit all of the continents with this cruise line.

Modern Luxury
This highlights the modern amenities such as real grass, stunning restaurants, globally inspired cuisine, service and an adult only solarium.

Luxurious Suites and Staterooms
This spread talks about the rooms the ship offers, and how they are designed to spread out in and entertain. There are five different types, some with enhanced amenities or a BVLGARI bath.

World Class Dining
Highlights the luxury dining available on board.

There are continental flavours, Eastern, Cafe style and Contemporary.

Service
Shows how luxury and personal the service is with 24/7 butler service, baristas who know your name and certified sommeliers.

Activities
Zumba, exotic cooking, Apple specialists, Corning Museum of Glass, games and sports.

Entertainment
It has bars and lounges, nightclubs, live music, production shows and guest entertainers and casinos.

AquaSpa
This describes the atmosphere of the spa and how high tech it is. You can do yoga and pilates.

Shore Excursions
This is an introduction to the land excursions available such as camel rides, Hong Kong harbour and trains in Alaska. There are three types, Shore excursions, private and custom tours, and celebrity cruisetours.

Before You Cruise
This is a list of tips to do after you've booked, but before you embark. Provide passport details, check-in online, book shore excursions, book add-ons, request luggage tags and print your cruise documents.

Europe 2014 Cruises
This is an introduction to the Europe cruises, and shows a list of the ports of call, ships and departure ports.

Celebrity's Europe
This page gives examples of excursions, hotels and cruisetours.

Cruises
Now are the pages of the different cruises, including itinerary, map, prices and highlights.

With the Asia ones, you have to fly first to the departure port, which isn't something I would include in my publication or next brief I don't think, because I want to keep it small.

Deck Plans
There are deckplans for each one to show you where the rooms and amenities are.

Suites and Staterooms
This gives a brief look to all of the rooms available.

Amenities
This shows which ships have what amenities in an easy to read table.

Marine
Here is another cruiseline which focuses on expedition cruising and sailing adventures.

Looking through the booklet, it is actually really small, with some ships only have 8 passengers! This isn't really something I am interested in, as they are more about expeditions than luxury travel.

Royal Caribbean Allure of the Seas
This is a small pamphlet advertising the new ship coming out next year, Allure of the Seas. It has an introduction to it, what is good about it, a ship plan with all the places highlighted as well as some sample cruises on the back.

This diagram shows you the amenities on the ship in a visual way.

This has a bit of information about it, what you can do and where you can go.

Norwegien Cruise Line
I really like this brochure, as it only has three ships in its fleet which you can see it says on the front cover.

Ships
It goes straight into showing you the three ships that it has, with some information on what they have.

Food
It then gives you a description of all the food and restaurants available, in a clean layout.

Entertainment
It then gives a rundown of the entertainment and bars. There is no fluff in this brochure, it just goes straight into what you want to know.

Activities
It then suggests the activities you can do while onboard, including going on the climbing wall, aqua park, bowling, salsa dancing, retail therapy, Zumba, spa, rope course and casino.

Haven
It then talks about the top of the ship called Haven, and what that entails. It has dining, accommodation and a courtyard for relaxing.

Staterooms
It then gives you a description and pictures of the rooms you can choose from.

Cruises
Then it goes onto the cruises, fitting five on a page for the first round of Med cruises.

The next page is for Caribbean cruises and does the same.

Norwegien Epic
It then goes onto the first cruise ship deck plans and rooms with a fold out page.

Norwegian Breakaway
The same layout and content as the last ship.

Then that's the end of the book! Very compact, and fits everything in that you want to know. This is the best book I have read so far as the others are too content heavy and you don't know where to look.

Norwegian Cruise Line Freestyle Cruising
Here is another brochure from Norwegian Cruise Line, but it is bigger than the other one. It is on Freestyle Cruising.

Contents
There is a contents page on this one, something that the previous one didn't have.

This had more fluffy pages like the other brochures I looked at.

Cunard
I've looked at the website for this, so I decided to have a look at the brochure as well. There are some good layouts as they are functional and easy to read, if not a bit boring. It does the job though, and fits in with the theme of the website.

This is the first double page spread, which gives you an insight to the atmosphere.

Special occassions such as weddings are put on here.
